How To Fix A Leaky Basement Wall

Water leaking into the basement of a home may cause a lot of damage. It may also encourage mold to grow, which may cause health problems for people living in the home, and may require the services of an expensive mold contractor to eliminate. It is therefore advisable that problems with water seepage into the basement should be dealt with as soon as possible. This article will describe how to fix a leaky basement wall.
A leaky foundation wall is quite a common problem for homes with basements, especially older properties. The leaks may occur for a number of reasons, and it makes sense to identify and eliminate the source of the leaks before doing any repair work inside the basement.
If the leaks are being caused by a problem with the plumbing then that must be rectified. Call in a plumbing contractor to do this. However, in most cases, the problem will be due to inadequate drainage around the home. The solution to this is to ensure that water downspouts, and the soil grade around the home, direct rainwater away from the foundation wall.
The first thing to do is to inspect the drainage around your home. After it rains, walk around the house looking for any areas where puddles of water collect near the house. Focus your attention particularly on areas where leaks have been noticed inside the basement.
It may be necessary to fix the soil grade around the house. Soil should slope away from the foundations so that rainwater drains away from the house, rather than collecting against the foundation wall. The slope can be built up with either soil or sand, and raked down so that it slopes away from the house.
Once the slope has been built up it may be covered by a section of landscaping plastic. This plastic can be spread over the slope and held down with about 4 inches of either sand or soil. If you wish to grow plants here then cut holes in the plastic with a utility knife.
It may also be advisable to extend the water drainage away from the downspouts. Short lengths of drain line or pipe may be used to carry water out of the downspouts, and away from the foundation wall of the house.
At this point it is now possible to repair the wall itself. This will require a hammer and chisel, hydraulic cement, and a good quality commercial sealant. Wearing proper safety equipment, such as eye goggles and gloves, is most advisable.
Identify any cracks and voids in the wall and use a chisel and a hammer to open them up. Remove any loose debris with a small brush. The cement may now be mixed according to the instructions provided, and applied to the crack or void. Once the cement has cured, apply the commercial sealant to the leaky wall.
A leaky basement wall can cause a lot of damage, and may allow mold growth in the home. This problem should be corrected as soon as possible, first by eliminating any plumbing or drainage problems, and then by patching up the wall itself.…

Planning Cabinets In Your Kitchen

The kitchen is one of the most functional areas in any home. For the most part, it is where a family’s meals are prepared. Therefore, it is a must to keep this area clean and organized in order to provide the best environment for whoever is tasked to prepare the food. A lot of diseases can be acquired from improper food handling brought about by an unsanitary kitchen environment. One of the best ways to manage the area is to have certain spots allotted for certain things we keep in it. Cabinets are surely a great help because they allow us to segregate food items and utensils accordingly. Without the organization that these cabinets provide, a kitchen can easily be a mess and even compromise the family’s health.
If you’re planning to install some new cabinets or change the overall cabinet layout in your kitchen, first you must assess what you don’t like about what you currently have. Pinpoint the problems. Are your current cabinets too small or too large? Do you think you could need more of them or do you think there’s too many of them that the purpose of organization seems to have been defeated? The more you know about what problems you have, the more you’re likely to end up happy with the changes or additions you’ll make.
Of course, the existing theme of your home or kitchen will play a part in the type of cabinets you choose. If your design is Victorian-inspired, you cannot put modern cabinets which are very minimalistic and the exact opposite of Victorian design. You have to be consistent with the rest of the style that your existing kitchen comes in. This also helps put a sense of organization and compactness in your environment as you move around the room while doing your tasks.
The kind of material used will also matter, both in the functions that you are making the cabinets for and in the style. Different themes will look good in different materials. For modern designs, plain wood panels or metals will be good, but for more artsy designs, certain materials should be used to allow for the same freedom in the styles that the cabinets will come in.
Most of all, make sure your cabinets are created not only to look good but to be fully functional. Before you create the design for your cabinets, think about what you’ll be using them for. Think specifically about the things you will need to store in the kitchen. Do not have too many cabinets as this can tempt you to keep things which you won’t really need. Think of things you’ll have a clear use for and stick to planning for them. Of course, a few extra cabinets will be good, but keep them to a minimum.…

Bathroom Remodeling – 8 Things to Consider When Planning a Bathroom Renovation

Bathroom remodeling has the second highest return on investment of any renovation you can do in your home. It is right next to kitchen remodeling for ROI.
A bathroom remodel can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars, to tens of thousands. It all depends on your budget, your home and your goals.
No matter what your budget, you have 2 goals with a bathroom remodel. To increase its beauty and to increase its function.
Here are 8 areas you need to consider whether you are thinking about just freshening up, or completely renovating your bathroom. The great thing about this list is you can choose to do 1, 2, or all of them in any combination, and still make a big impact on your bathrooms usability and look.
Cabinets
The first thing you are going to notice when you walk into your new bathroom, are the cabinets. New cabinets will improve your bathroom almost instantly.
Cabinet prices range a lot, from cheap particle board to custom construction. But, you can usually find something quite elegant for a reasonable price if you shop around.
Hardware
Even if you can’t afford to upgrade your cabinetry, new hardware will make a huge difference. Whether you have replaced your cabinetry or not, there are literally thousands of different items you can pick out to enhance your look.
It is amazing how a nice set of hardware will make even a mediocre cabinet look high end.
Fixtures
New bathroom fixtures, including faucets and sinks etc should be chosen to fit in with the style of the cabinetry and the overall look. You don’t want to put modern fixtures in with elegant old fashioned cabinetry and hardware.
Even if you can’t upgrade your cabinets, adding new fixtures, as long as they are a similar style, will make a big difference in the feel of your bathroom.
Flooring / Tile
There simply isn’t a better finish for a bathroom floor than tile. Usually bathrooms aren’t that large, so the cost difference over other options will not even be that significant. Its possible find inexpensive tile if you look around for sales. It is also possible to find very expensive, elegant tile, depending on your budget.
Another popular option is linoleum, but if you can find inexpensive tile, it will definitely have a bigger impact, for probably a similar cost.
Storage
Creating a storage wall is always a great investment. Bathrooms never seem to have enough storage, but by building a storage wall, you can get small items out of your way, and create an attractive display.
Mirror
Adding a big mirror to your bathroom will accomplish 2 things. First of all, it is a very practical addition, allowing you to get ready with ease. Second, it will make your small bathroom look larger.
Lighting
If your bathroom is bright, it doesn’t matter if it is small. It will feel bright and comfortable. There are many choices of different bathroom lights available starting at the very inexpensive and moving up to very extravagant.
Tub or Shower
In Panama, bath tubs are not very popular, but they are gaining acceptance. Whirlpool tubs are built in many different sizes and shapes. They will fit into any spot where an existing tub exists, and often even where there is an existing shower.
These 8 improvements can be done on their own, or in combination with a complete bathroom remodel. It all depends on your budget and goals. But, if you want to freshen up your bathroom, these are the 8 areas you need to think about.
The first thing you need to do is determine your budget. And then, look at each one of these items to decide which you can change, and which you can not.
A bathroom remodel, whether small or large, will make your home a much more enjoyable place to be. And it will make your home more valuable when you go to sell.…

Keep Your Appliances and Your Wallet Healthy: Small Appliance Care Tips

Here are some tips for your small appliances in the kitchen and laundry as well as a few tips and tricks on cleaning.
Do you rely on coffee in the morning to get you going? I sure do, and if the coffee maker broke down I’d probably go look for a 24 hour convenience store so I could have my 6am charge. We tend to take our appliances for granted until they break. However, a coffee maker just declines gradually until we wonder why it takes so long to brew, or the coffee tastes bitter. You guessed it – it’s time to clean it! What happens is that the sediment and scale build up in the lines, vents, and tank. To get rid of this build-up, run the coffee maker through a cycle with a vinegar solution comprised of one part white vinegar and two parts water. Now turn off the unit and let it sit for 30 minutes. Next, empty the solution down the drain or put it in a spray bottle and use it as a cleaner in the first round of some of your dirtier jobs (vinegar is a terrific cleaner, and gentle on the environment). Now run two cycles of water through the machine. Wipe the outside with the vinegar water solution and dry. You’ll think you have a brand new coffee maker. Some sources say to do this every week – but unless you’re running a boarding house, every few months should do it.
What else can you clean with vinegar? The possibilities are endless, given vinegar’s acidic and naturally antibacterial cleaning power and it’s relative chemical safety. In fact, those of you who know how to keep your air conditioner’s condensate line unclogged with bleach – switch to vinegar and it works just as well, and is much more environmentally friendly. All of the HVAC (heating and cooling) techs I have spoken to have now gone to vinegar, saying it is not as rough on the equipment.
Is your steam iron slowing down? Fill the water chamber with equal parts of white distilled vinegar and water. Set it upright on a safe surface and let it steam for 5 minutes. Let the iron cool. Now refill the iron and shake it in an old towel. Next time you fire it up, make sure you iron an old cloth for a few minutes to exit the rest of any remaining vinegar before moving on to your clothes.
To see hundreds of other uses for vinegar, just type “cleaning with vinegar” into your favorite internet search engine, and see the endless advice that comes up.
Luckily, most of our kitchen appliances keep going with no maintenance or help on our part. So keeping them clean is probably the most we need to do, along with following safety tips. One of the things most us resist is reading the manual that came with the device. “No time!” we exclaim, but then wonder why the device is not doing what we want it to do. Then we actually waste more time looking for the manual than it would take to have read it in the first place. So, do yourself a favor, grit your teeth and READ the first few pages of that manual, and then put it in a drawer or box with ALL the other manuals. Admit it – I will – all the manuals are NOT in one drawer, they are scattered all over the house – in the strangest of places, like the bills drawer or the magazine drawer, or the tools drawer; the garage, the attic, even in the car. If we all start now, we might be organized by Christmas 2050.…

How Remodeling My Bathroom Helped Me Sell My House

In the sad and depressing time of the real estate market downturn, trying to sell my house was like wading through a river of lava wearing a pair of moccasins- I was getting burned! There were three other houses in my neighborhood that were all up for sale for the same price, but they had been recently remodeled. What was I going to do to make my house stand out among the crowd? I knew that there was one room in my house that could use some updating, so I decided to get in on some Salt Lake City bathroom remodeling.
Renovation or Repair
First thing was first; I needed to decide whether to repair the bathroom I had or completely renovate it. I invited a friend of mine over to take a look at it for me to give me his opinion. He said, “Renovation”, and I said, “Okay”. Apparently there were too many outdated fixtures and the decor was retro- the bad kind- so repair wouldn’t have done anything to increase the worth of the property.
Doing It Myself
Since I was trying to keep things within a tight budget, I decided to do the work of bathroom renovation myself. Sure, I would ask my contractor friend to help out when he could, but I was going to do most of the work myself. I knew a little bit about cabinet re-facing, fixture installation and lighting so I knew I could at least do those things. Due to the confidence in my abilities and ideas, I knew that this Salt Lake City bathroom remodeling project would be a breeze.
It wasn’t- I decided to call a contractor.
It took less than a month to do the work, and I found a great contractor at Homeshow Daily. He was pre-screened and he also had some great design ideas that helped things go smoother; otherwise the renovation would have taken a year rather than just a month. I was very grateful for his services. He was like my renovation guide- my bathroom guru.
The End Result
Once the Salt Lake City bathroom remodeling project was complete, I added, “remodeled bathroom” to my house listing and the calls started coming in. People wanted a bathroom that was brand new, and it showed in the offers I received. People from all over Wasatch and Salt Lake City, Utah were calling and offering above what I had listed originally.
In the end, the Salt Lake City bathroom remodeling was exactly what my home needed to it did- quickly.…

Simple Home Improvement Techniques From Experienced People

You want to make home improvements, but have no idea where to begin. Is this familiar? Many people put off home improvement projects, simply because they aren’t sure where to start. This article has shared tips that can help you update your home.

Two PVC pipes can be easily attached using primer and cement made for PVC. If you don’t use this stuff, your pipes could leak. Also, make sure there is no moisture on the pipes.

If you aren’t installing a window in your bathroom, make sure it is at least properly ventilated. Hot water and humidity can cause dangerous mold to grow. Even applying paint to the walls will not completely remove the mold. Instead, try to find something that will stop its growth altogether. Install a window or ventilation, to dehumidify your space.

For safety, install peepholes in any exterior doors. Before you open up your front door, you should ask who it is. You can also put in a peephole, which is very easily accomplished. The only thing you must do is some drilling! A peephole will let you confirm that it really is your brother at the door rather than a home invader.

Pick your color scheme from something that is already in the room. It may be an upholstery material, curtains or an area rug that you decide to use to build a color scheme. If the furniture in your room is patterned, choose the dominant color. Use the remaining two shades to paint trim and accent.

Your homeowner insurance will go down if you put smoke alarms in your home. This is especially important if you live in an old home that might not have been built with fire-resistant materials. Smoke detectors are also responsible for saving numerous lives every year.

Add value to your home and increase it’s curb appeal by adding a layer or two of glossy paint to the shutters and front door. When your home has a lighter exterior, bright reds or blues can offer great curb appeal. For those homes that have darker exteriors, consider cooler, deep colors such as jade or eggplant.

You need to find your house’s best points and make sure to showcase them. For example, ensure all great views are unobstructed by window coverings. If is always a great idea to highlight a home’s selling points. Doing those extra things will allow a buyer to see your home’s full potential and make it more desirable to buyers.

One of the best times to develop a renovation budget is at the first of the year. This is because a lot expenses make you really stressed and you will be likely to overcompensate when it comes to your budget, that is why budgeting at the start of the year helps this problem.

In conclusion, home improvements can be made by anyone. For anyone new to home improvement, only a little education is needed to get going. You’ve just finished reading a starter guide that was full of all sorts of useful information. Keep in mind that this information should help you do home improvements.…
