How to Do a Good Bathroom Remodel

When you come right down to it, remodeling or redesigning a bathroom is simple. What you are doing is redesigning a plain box to maximize attractiveness, efficiency, and usability.
Don’t think of a bathroom remodel as starting over. In fact, many of your fittings and fixtures can be used in your new design. Instead, think of how to change the overall design, incorporating items that you currently use if appropriate. This article describes how to remodel your bathroom without starting from scratch.
Start by picking your theme or style. This is the first and most important element to redesigning a bathroom. Generally you will want to choose either a contemporary or a traditional design. You will then use this first choice to guide future choices, such as what colors and fabrics to use.
Part of choosing style is to consider what type of feel you want to evoke. Do you want a calm space, an elegant space, a romantic space, a relaxed space? Having a sense of the overall effect you are trying to achieve, while still early in planning, helps ensure that you will be successful in your design.
Pay attention to scale. Not only do you want to choose the right items for the feel and style of the room, you also want to choose items that fit and are easily usable. All furniture and fixtures in the bathroom should fit without making the space feel crowded.
If you have a smaller room, don’t use huge pieces of furniture. For instance, filling a small bedroom with a king sized bed is a mistake. Similarly, you don’t want to use as much furniture as you possibly can in a room. It is better to leave room to walk around. More space in a room makes for a more relaxing feeling.
The next element you’ll want to consider is color. Colors have different feels that they bring. Some colors, such as reds or bright blues, are energizing and vibrant. You would not want to choose one of these colors if you were going for a relaxing or soothing feel in the room. In that case, a better choice might be a pale color or earth tones.
Pattern and texture can add visual interest to the room but don’t overdo it. For instance, a jacquard weave on a bedspread can add texture without being garish and overwhelming. Too many competing patterns and textures can be tiring on the eyes.
Accessories. With accessories, go for impact rather than volume. A single, stunning piece can often have more effect on the overall look of a room than can a collection of smaller items.
Artwork. Don’t go overboard here. As with accessories, you want to have maximum impact with minimum clutter. One well-chosen piece of art is a better investment than several mediocre pieces scattered on the walls.…

Remodel Or Upgrade Your Kitchen, Bathroom, Or Entire Home

As time passes, every homeowner begins to get tired of some aspect of their house.  “The kitchen’s too small” or “The bathroom is not a place for a relaxing bath” are some of the common complaints.  Every home could always be better; more attractive and functional.  How does one achieve the results they desire?  Which room or rooms should be given priority for remodeling?
Most real estate agents and builders will recommend that remodeling a kitchen and bathroom will maximize any increase in the home’s value, especially if selling the home is a potential reality within the next five years or so.  Even if the homeowner is not planning to sell, it still makes perfect sense to improve the home just for their own enjoyment.
With all the new and exciting kitchen and bathroom upgrades available on the market such as whirlpool tubs, imported tile, efficient green light fixtures, and so on, it’s not surprising that people are itching to spruce up their own abodes.  Currently the trend for upgrading and remodeling a home has been with a strong focus on efficiency and the use of “green” materials.
As more builders recognize individual’s concerns regarding the environment and future generations, options for remodeling any part of the home are opening up.  What once was viewed as impractical or expensive is now acceptable due to individual lifestyle changes being made by homeowners in order to be more efficient and cost effective.
Many of the more common place “green” items available for bathroom remodels are dual flush toilets, LED lighting, and recycled tiles. Pedestal sinks have been making a comeback as well, as more homeowners are trying to achieve a more classic feel.  Many such fixtures can be reclaimed from older home sites that have been demolished or remodeled themselves.
By reusing older fixtures and recycled materials, landfills are being spared the increased burden of more needless waste and pollution and many of these salvaged elements can be found at great savings to the homeowner.  Finding these treasures isn’t always easy though as builders tend to have more resources to find them for clients than the individual homeowner.
That doesn’t mean an individual can’t perform their own remodel, but having a builder working for the homeowner will save a lot of time, hassle,  and frustration.  Many homeowners simply lack the knowledge, skill, and experience regarding remodeling or building a bathroom, kitchen, or even a simple stairway.  The large benefit of utilizing a builder for a stairway or a more complex remodel such as a kitchen remodel or bathroom remodel is that the project will be completed in a timely fashion ensuring a minimal disruption to daily life.…

Are You Thinking About Bathroom Remodeling?

Are you thinking about bathroom remodeling? You might be thinking about a bathroom remodel for any of a number of reasons.

You need more space or functionality

You need a second sink

You want to provide a little more privacy when two people are in the bathroom at the same time

You want to make your bathroom safer

You want to make your bathroom accessible to people with disabilities

You want to update or modernize your bathroom

You want to create your own spa in the privacy of your own home

You want to add a shower

You want to add a whirlpool tub

You want a linen closet in the bathroom

You are getting your house ready to sell

You just want a little change

These are all great reasons to remodel a bathroom. And your reason for remodeling will determine the changes you make. Your budget will also be an important factor in deciding how you will change your bathroom. But there are a few other things you might want to consider in your plans.

— Are you planning to stay in your house as you grow older? If so, you might want to plan to equip the bathroom with fixtures that will make it safer. Should you consider higher toilets? Should you consider stepping into a bathtub in order to take a shower?

— Will someone who has a disability use the bathroom? How will you need to arrange fixtures for ease of use and for the ability to move around in the bathroom? Do you need to plan for space to navigate a wheelchair? If the bathroom is to be used by someone in a wheelchair, should you lower the surface of the vanity? Should you use different sinks?

— One current trend in new homes is to build larger master bathrooms. If you are remodeling your bathroom because you plan to sell your house, this might be a consideration.

— Do you want to add a little luxury to your life? Do you want to create your own spa?

If your remodeling goal is to make your bathroom more accessible and safer, you will probably want to think seriously about access to the shower or to the bathtub. You will certainly want to place a few grab bars (near the toilet, near the shower and near the tub). You might want to install a seat in the shower or a raised toilet. You may find that some of the luxury features also serve comfort and therapeutic purposes as well. For example, multiple shower heads can be soothing for aching joints. A heated floor may be very comfortable in a cold climate.

If your goal is to add a little luxury to your life, you will find that the sky is the limit. Almost anything you can imagine is possible if you have the space and the budget.

If you just need a little extra space or an additional sink, you can do renovations that meet those needs and others at the same time. For example, if you want a second sink in the master bathroom, you can create dramatic effects by choosing a particular style of sink. If you want to remodel your bathroom to provide additional privacy when two people are using the bathroom at the same time, your remodel might be as simple as adding a short wall and a door to enclose the toilet area.

So what is popular now in terms of design and materials? The answer really depends upon what you want to achieve and the direction you want to go. Retro continues to be very popular. You might want to tear out existing vanity areas and bathtubs so you can replace them with a retro footed free-standing bathtub and pedestal sinks. You may be tired of chrome fixtures and simply want to try a new look like brushed nickel.

If you have decided to create a home spa, you might want to use more mirrors, particularly the fog-free mirrors. These mirrors can also be used as nearly-invisible doors to cabinets and cupboards. There are many new styles of small sinks that create amazing visual effects, as well as functionality. You can turn your bathroom into a steam room. You can install a shower with multiple adjustable shower heads at various heights to provide a full body massage. You can install a bathtub on any level (sunken, raised, etc.) for beauty and functionality. Your tub can include several types of jets for hydrotherapy effects.

Your choice of materials will be determined by the “look” you want to achieve. Ceramic tile has almost completely replaced vinyl floor covering. The many varieties and designs in ceramic tile can create virtually any style you want. You can install heating elements beneath the tile …

Simple Ideas for Updating Your Bathroom

Remodeling your entire bathroom can be an extensive and costly task. Thankfully, there are many small updates that can be made that will make just as large an impact on the look and function of your room. These small updates require little time, little knowledge of home improvement and won’t burn a hole in your pocket.
Replace your fixtures. The two main fixtures that should be replaced are the faucets and shower heads The faucet is used by essentially everyone who enters the bathroom, so having one that is up-to-date, functional and attractive is a must. Many times, people use the default shower head that came with their home- these are usually older and may be rusted. Updating to a new shower head is inexpensive and easy. They make a variety of water-efficient ones that are great for those who want to “go green”.
Replace any old hardware. It is amazing the difference new cabinet knobs and towel racks will have on the space.
Make everything matches. In many bathrooms, things are mismatched and there isn’t an overall aesthetic going on. Many times, people don’t see the decor of bathrooms to be as important as a living room or kitchen. However, by choosing towels, bath mats and shower curtains that all go together, your bathroom will become more inviting. Replace old hardware and knobs so that they all match. For example, make everything stainless steel or brushed nickel so it is cohesive. Adding a few paintings or simple decor items will also help make your bathroom a more inviting space.
Switch up the lighting. The bathroom is a room where good lighting is a must. You need proper lighting to see while showering and bathing, as well as when applying make-up, cleaning your face or brushing your teeth in the sink. Choose high-quality and ample lighting fixtures to replace old ones.Always replace burned-out bulbs with new ones so the lighting is as bright as possible. For more ambient lighting, install a dimmer switch if needed. Nice quality light will make you feel and look better.
Update your cabinets. Putting in new cabinets altogether can be time-consuming and pricey, so by updating them just a little, you can see benefits. Your options include painting your cabinets a new color, refinishing them, applying a light glaze or gloss, simply giving them a good clean or replacing the cabinet doors. Adding new hardware also can spruce up the look of your bathroom. Replacing the sink top is another option that will give you bang for the buck.…

Bathroom Blinds

The bathrooms in our homes are often our own personal sanctuaries where we retreat at the end of the day to relax and forget the day. Homeowners across the country are investing more money into their homes and one of the primary places that the investment is best spent is in the bathroom. Bathrooms now are much larger than they were in the past and often have lavish showers and spa tubs.
When shopping for our bathrooms, textiles are an important part of the progress. It gives us the opportunity to add our own personal touch to our baths and leave our own unique mark. We, of course, want our textiles to follow a common theme. Bathroom blinds are a great way to tie-in our tastes in our baths. As we are spending more time in our bathrooms as a personal resort from the world, blinds have become a necessity.
We find ourselves sometimes spending hours in the comfort of our bathrooms and don’t want to be bothered or seen by outsiders. Bathroom blinds come in a variety of designs and styles, but functionality should be the foremost concern. Cloth blinds are not good for bathrooms as they will become moist and possibly become moldy. Solid woods are a better choice, but synthetic woods are the best bet. These types of blinds will not be susceptible to bathroom moisture or aging due to the humid bathroom conditions.
Finding the perfect bathroom blinds can give you the privacy that you need while adding your own personal style to your home bathroom.…
